What unplanned downtime really costs midsize firms

What unplanned downtime really costs midsize firms
Downtime can also create contractual and compliance exposure that is easy to overlook. | Photo: Annie Spratt

Network downtime can stop a midsize firm from taking orders, serving customers and completing routine work within minutes. The visible disruption may be brief, yet the financial effects often continue after systems return. Lost productivity, recovery costs and delayed projects all affect the final bill. Firms that understand these wider consequences can set realistic continuity targets and address weak points before the next outage exposes them.

Downtime can also create contractual and compliance exposure that is easy to overlook. Service-level commitments may trigger penalty clauses, while interruptions to transaction processing can complicate audits or regulatory reporting. Finance and legal teams therefore have a stake in continuity planning, not just IT staff.

The Real Price of Network Outages

The direct cost starts with employees who can’t access email, shared files or business applications. If 80 people lose an hour and their average employment cost is £25 per hour, the productivity loss alone reaches £2,000. Missed sales, overtime and supplier delays push the figure higher. Published IT outage cost estimates show how quickly losses can escalate, although each firm’s exposure depends on its systems and transaction volumes.

Outsourcing IT support services can help businesses without sufficient in-house expertise introduce proactive monitoring, security updates and remote management. When assessing support, ask how incidents are prioritised, what response times are documented and which systems receive continuous monitoring.

Customer Trust Erodes Quickly

Customers judge reliability through the service they experience. A distributor whose ordering portal fails near a daily cut-off may force buyers to telephone, wait or move their order elsewhere. Even if the outage lasts 30 minutes, customers may remember the missed delivery more clearly than the quick technical recovery.

The cost of small-business downtime also includes reputational damage and lost opportunities, concerns that apply equally to growing midsize firms. Clear communication limits uncertainty. Give customers a working status page, acknowledge the disruption early and provide realistic update times. Avoid promising an exact restoration time until the technical team has identified the fault. After recovery, contact customers whose orders or support requests were affected and confirm what happens next.

Why Reactive Fixes Keep Failing

Reactive support deals with symptoms after staff report them. This leaves the business exposed during the period between an early warning sign and a visible failure. A storage drive may approach capacity for weeks, for example, before a critical application stops saving data. Monitoring could flag that trend while there is still time to act.

Repeated temporary fixes create another problem. Restarting an unstable service may restore access, but it doesn’t explain why the service keeps failing. Keep an incident record showing the cause, affected systems, recovery time and permanent action required. The same discipline applies beyond technology because ignoring small fixes can cost a business heavily. Review recurring incidents monthly and assign each unresolved cause to a named owner with a deadline.

Practical Steps to Guarantee Uptime

No provider can promise that every service will remain available without interruption, but firms can build a dependable uptime strategy. Start by listing the systems that generate revenue, support customers or hold operational data. Set a recovery time target for each one, then map its dependencies, including internet connections, cloud platforms and key suppliers.

Test backups by restoring files, not merely checking that backup software reports success. Use more than one connectivity route where loss of internet access would halt the business. Document who can declare a major incident and how employees will continue essential work.

Run a recovery exercise at least twice a year. A realistic test might simulate the loss of a shared application during a busy morning and measure how long staff take to switch processes. The results will reveal gaps that an uptime percentage alone can’t show. The most useful outcome is a short, funded list of improvements with owners and completion dates.

Yahoo Mail down in the UK as users report temporary error 15
Yahoo says the issue usually resolves itself within a few minutes to several hours.

Yahoo Mail users in the UK have reported difficulties accessing their email accounts on Monday, 19 October 2026, with some encountering error messages when trying to open their inboxes.

Among the messages reported are “Your mail is temporarily unavailable” and “Temporary Error 15”, leaving affected customers unable to access their emails for hours.

The latest complaints follow several days of reported Yahoo Mail problems in Britain. Users have previously described difficulties signing in, loading messages and accessing their accounts through web browsers.

However, there is currently no confirmed nationwide Yahoo Mail outage, and the company has not publicly established the cause of Monday’s reported problems.

Yahoo Mail users report problems accessing their accounts

Complaints about Yahoo Mail have appeared on independent outage-monitoring websites, with British customers describing problems accessing, sending and managing emails.

UK user Claire Thomas shared her experience on Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions through reports submitted online.

“The website is saying ‘Your mail is temporarily unavailable’ – all the menu is greyed out. On my phone using the app, I can see my emails but there’s nothing new coming in, and I can’t delete emails (they reappear),” she reported.

The disruption has also affected people attempting to use Yahoo Mail for work.

Stoke-on-Trent-based freelance journalist Richard Scott took to X on Monday morning after encountering problems sending an email.

“Is anyone else having trouble accessing Yahoo Mail or sending email from there? Trying to send a pitch out and just getting an error message. Got 93% storage space so it can’t be because my inbox is full,” Scott wrote.

For some customers, the problem appears to be partial, with incoming emails still arriving but other functions remaining unavailable.

“I’m getting emails coming in but can’t send anything and when I try and view anything it says email is temporary unavailable,” user Stacy Neale-Chambers reported.

The complaints suggest that users are experiencing different symptoms, although it remains unclear how widespread the disruption is.

What is Yahoo Mail temporary error 15 and how to fix it?

According to Yahoo’s official support guidance, temporary error 15 can occur when the email service encounters a temporary problem.

Yahoo says the issue usually resolves itself within a few minutes to several hours. Possible causes include unsupported browsers or accessing the same account through multiple browsers or devices simultaneously.

For customers unable to access Yahoo Mail, the company recommends restarting their browser and clearing its cache.

Users should also check that their browser and operating system are supported. Signing out of all devices before logging back in may help restore access.

If the problem continues, Yahoo suggests trying its official mobile app or a compatible email application.

Customers can also check Downdetector UK for reports from other users.

ChatGPT users faced performance problems on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, after OpenAI confirmed an ongoing technical issue affecting GPT-6.1 Sol Codex and Work mode.

The artificial intelligence company published an incident report on its official status page, warning of degraded performance across the affected services. The disruption raised concerns for users relying on OpenAI’s tools for coding, research, productivity and other professional tasks.

OpenAI had been investigating the incident for over an hour, with performance degradation starting at around 9am.

ChatGPT is being affected by performance issues

According to OpenAI’s own dashboard, ChatGPT had one affected component, while Codex had four affected components this morning. Both services were marked with yellow warning indicators, signalling degraded performance rather than a confirmed complete outage.

Users have also taken to the internet to complain about difficulties accessing ChatGPT on Tuesday morning, 13 October. On Reddit, users reported encountering error messages such as “Selected model is at capacity. Please try a different model” and “Connection interrupted. Waiting for the complete answer” when attempting to use GPT-6.1 Sol.

The complaints emerged as OpenAI acknowledged degraded performance, although it remains unclear whether all reported issues are directly linked to the ongoing disruption.

Exactly one month earlier, on 13 September 2026, a ChatGPT outage affected users across Europe, with OpenAI confirming elevated error rates. Later that month, further ChatGPT disruptions affected Plus and Pro subscribers. October has also seen a series of technical problems, with incidents reported on 6, 8 and 10 October. These included errors affecting ChatGPT conversations and issues preventing some Android users from accessing content in the app. The latest outage adds to a growing list of service disruptions affecting OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot.

When will ChatGPT Sol Codex be working normally again?

Users experiencing problems with ChatGPT, Codex or Work mode may have to wait for further information from OpenAI before normal service can be confirmed.

Degraded performance does not necessarily mean a platform is completely unavailable. Instead, affected users may encounter slower responses, unreliable functionality or difficulties completing certain tasks.

The disruption could be particularly inconvenient for developers using Codex for programming assistance and professionals depending on Work mode for complex workflows.

As of the status update shown on Tuesday morning, the incident remained classified as “Investigating”, with OpenAI yet to confirm the underlying cause or provide an estimated time for restoring normal performance.
